Cardboard Arduino R2-D2

As you can see, this was pretty quick to build with the help of a 5 year old. The robot is on a chassis that has two powered wheels to move around. I had previously used it in this project.

These motors are controller by an L298N motor controller. A stepper motor controls the head rotation, a speaker makes various beeps and noises. An infrared sensor and remote control allow for control.

The stepper motor is overkill. A servo would be much simpler and would result in fewer lines of code. However it does allow for continuous rotation. The infrared remote control allows the robot to be driven, head rotated and tones played. The tones were found somewhere on the net, but I cannot find where to reference the author. Full code is available at  here on github.
