Fun with javascript

I was recently helping my daughter with a javascript game that she was building as part of her high school computer science class. Quite a contrast to learning to code on a Commodore 64 using BASIC in the ’80s. Also quite a nice change from building banking software.

The teacher encouraged the students to make different versions of game features and sprite behaviour. Then document the pros and cons of different versions they tried, and finally choose the best version of the feature.

Trying different approaches is a pretty powerful process that is sometimes skipped when developing software in the workplace. Teaching students that the first design or solution can always be improved upon, so coming up with alternative approaches before settling on the final approach usually leads to the best solution.
